Ben Travers - Manager Senior Financial Adviser

Ben Travers - Manager Senior Financial Adviser Ben Travers Manager Senior Financial AdviserPosted March 19, 2019, by Jenny Ben Travers is a Manager of Wealth Management, specialising in private advisory services. Bens 18 years experience across accounting, banking and ASX listed organisations, has seen him provide a vast level of advice from mum and dads, to ultra-high networth. Hes completed a Master of Financial Planning, Bachelor of Commerce - Accounting, and is a Certified Financial Planner with the FPA. Ben volunteers his time as a committee member of the FPA and Kaplans Future Advisers Editorial Committee, and has been awarded Money Managements 2018 Financial Planner of the Year Award, Financial Standards Power50 Most Influential Advisers in Australia and welches a recent finalist in IFAs Industry Thought Leader of the Year. What does your role involve?Whilst my core role is strategic financial planning, my specialities go beyond. People value money differently, so my role is to discover the true reasons why people need my help. If everyone made good decisions, they would not need advice. It is often the poor decisions or individual biases that lead people to see me. From here, you have a solid foundation to build wealth and protect it. This is a continual process, from increasing a clients financial literacy, to adapting to change in markets and legislation. Talk us through a day at the office for youA typical day departures before the office, where I read for an hour. This may be news, markets or articles. Its important to keep informed, so I can talk to clients on topical issues. The office then involves the usual client or geschftlicher umgang meetings and preparing and implementing advice. However, I always make sure I allocate time for my own business planning and personal development. This may be in the form of exploring new business opportunities, networking at seminars, or liaising with like-minded professionals to share success stories. Tell u s about your study journeyWhen I finished high school, I did not know what financial planning was. I had no idea I wanted to be an adviser, so I studied a broader Bachelor of Commerce Accounting. In my final year of university, I knew advising was the correct path, so I started work and completed a Diploma of Financial Planning, the FPAs Certified Financial Planner course and half a dozen specialist courses. Fast forward to recent times and given the new FASEA requirements, I decided to raise my own standards and complete a Master of Financial Planning. I thoroughly enjoyed the course, particularly the research paper, as it personally helped me identify industry opportunities over the next five years. I would also like to complete a PhD when I have time maybe in retirement You have a wealth of experience... talk us through your career journeyI chose to start my career in paraplanning. With hindsight, this was the best decision, as this background helps my advice today. I believe t he key foundation for a quality planner is being competently trained with technical and legislative knowledge from the outset. At 24, I was the team leader of a national paraplanning division and this gave me the tools I needed to move into advising. It took years to find my speciality in advising and building my client engagement skills, and this journey will continue for years to come. I now sit on several committees and enjoy giving back to the community. Tell us about Kaplans Advisers of the FutureThis is a new committee run by Kaplan Professional, to bring together advisers in the advice fraternity that want to play a fundamental role in taking the profession into the future. This includes identifying key trends, changes impacting advisers, innovations around technology and debating new ideas. Its great to be part of such a motivated group of individuals. What did you want to be when you were younger?A fighter pilot. Mum said no. That was the end of that. Why the finance field?I was the dux of mathematics at school and always had an interest in numbers, so finance was a natural fit. Yet financial planning allowed me to apply this to strategies that actually helped people. Whats the most rewarding thing thats happened to you in your career?I inherited a terminally ill client from another adviser. He had very little money, as most of his wealth had been depleted to fund his treatment and medical bills. After further research, I discovered a lost super fund with a balance of only $9,000. However, attached to the policy was $180,000 in insurance. Whilst we were successful in our claim to the insurer, the superannuation law was different, making it much harder to access the money, as he was only 42 years of age. It took four months of pleading a case to the trustee and finding a loophole in the legislation, but we were successful in the end. The client spent his remaining months on a cruise ship, using the money to pay for an emergency specialist and equipment to accompany him on the cruise. I will never forget handing him the cheque, and its why I love what I do.anthroponym a career highlightI have been lucky enough to receive several awards over my career. We have some great advisers in this country, so to receive the personal award from Money Management as 2018 Financial Planner of the Year, was certainly a highlight. There is a lot of work behind the scenes, so its great to be recognised for this. Name something you still dont knowA bit of everything. No adviser is a specialist in all fields, hence I will retire still not knowing all aspects of financial planning. Which makes the learning curve continuous and challenging thats what I like about this career. Whats the most important career tip someone has given you?My mentor is not in the industry and gave me the best advice Set a plan for five years and work your backside off. The benefits come after. To explain the context, a career can be 40 years long. Aiming for the top from da y one is ambitious, but it doesnt happen overnight. My mentor broke down my career into sections, specifically setting out both goals and challenges. Once you reach a goal and remove a challenge, your weg of success increases. Its hard work, so its important to celebrate the wins, rest after busy periods and keep yourself healthy. What career advice do you wish someone had given you after you graduated high school?Be open. The most successful people do what they love. Surround yourself with people that inspire you - listen, watch and learn then make your own decisions. Do not follow a path simply because someone else tells you to. Whatimportant qualities and skills should people have if they want to become a financial planner? You need a perfect balance of hard and soft skills. There is no doubt a planner requires specific knowledge, modelling capabilities, understanding products, utilising technology, etc. Yet the soft skills such as listening, having empathy, respecting client valu es and engaging in conversation are crucial. Clients value the latter more, as they expect the former to be a given, so its important to continually develop a combination of both skills. Whats next for you?The Royal Commission into our industry has already seen significant changes, and this will continue over the coming years. I aim to take financial planning into the new era, attract new entrants, and be a leader in moving the industry towards professionalism. Are you a numbers man (or woman) like Ben? The first is to include them with your skills in the qualifications section. This is the most common and traditional way to include this information. The other option is to create a new section for your certifications. You can also opt to combine several aspects into one section, including affiliations, awards, or achievements. This new section should appear near the end of your resume. Be sure to revi ew our senior financial analyst resume sample before you start writing.3. What should you include about your accomplishments on your senior financial analyst resume? The most important aspect to include in your accomplishments is real metrics. You should describe the situation, your actions, and the result it had, which should include specific and real numbers, if possible. Our senior financial analyst resume sample is one of your best tools for creating your resume.4. How do you list awards on your senior financial analyst resume?Like your certifications information, there are two ways to list awards on your resume in a dedicated section or alongside other information in an existing section. Unlike the certifications information, however, choosing the latter approach should see your awards included in the experience section. They should simply be another bullet point under the position in which you earned the award. Improve your resume as much as possible by reviewing our senior financial analyst resume sample.5. How do you list references on a senior financial analyst resume? We do not recommend including references on your resume in most cases. Employers will request references if it is important for them to speak with previous employers. Even if you are applying for your first job, it is best to assume readers do not need references unless they are specifically requested. You should also avoid including the phrase References available upon request, as this simply wastes mora space on the page. Use our senior financial analyst resume sample to fill out your resume without reference information.

How to Manage a Side Hustle When Youre Employed Full-Time

How to Manage a Side Hustle When Youre Employed Full-TimeHow to Manage a Side Hustle When Youre Employed Full-Time Whether its to fund a vacation to Europe, get serious about retirement or just buy more avocado toast, young workers today are increasingly getting into the side hustle game. In fact, between 39 percent and 44 percent of millennial workers earn income via self-employed side gigs, and of the overall side-hustle workforce, 41 percent are using that gig to supplement full-time work with an employer. As someone who juggles a full-time career as an editor with 10 to 20 hours of freelance writing each week, I can vouch that its no easy task. But I can also share that the income, especially as I figure out how to save money for vacations and renovate a new home, is totally worth it.Think youve got what it takes to balance a demanding full-time job with a rewarding side hustle ? Follow this guide to stay on track. The biggest hurdle to being self-employed wh ile holding a full-time job is ensuring youre actually allowed to do so.For starters, check your employment contract and company handbook to see if your employer has policies against or guidelines for a second job. More progressive companies increasingly allow you to work a side gig, but they will still often protect themselves with non-disclosure agreements and non-compete clauses. The wisest move to protect yourself? Talk to someone in HR and also notify your boss. When I first started at my current full-time job, I sat down with my boss and explained my freelance business that I manage on nights and weekends. In the conversation, I took the lead in explaining the boundaries I would set in place to ensure optimal work performance (more on this next) and offered total transparency about my current clients and what I did for them. Obviously, because Im writing this, HR and my boss took it quite well.Running your own side hustle can be exciting, but if you have a full-time job, ther e are at least 40 waking hours each week that you cannot think about your other gig.For starters, that means no work on your own company during your scheduled work hours. Your full-time job likely comprises a larger portion of your income, so it isnt worth getting caught and potentially fired for working on your personal projects. This also means you cannot take home office supplies, use company printers for your side gig or conduct side-hustle business on your company laptop, even after hours. Remember, companies can monitor your internet activity and could easily discover if you are working on your side hustle using company property on company time. Finally, if you are in need of new staff for your side hustle, do not recruit your coworkers. Look anywhere and everywhere else - just not at work.I am lucky enough to have a partner at home who works roughly 30 hours a week, meaning he takes care of most of the chores around the house to accommodate my 50- to 60-hour weeks. Otherwi se, I would be an adult eating Pizza Rolls every night and re-wearing shirts for days at a time.Time management is important when working full-time and a side gig - not just to hit deadlines, but also to prioritize your health and sanity. New to figuring out how to balance that side hustle? Glassdoor recommends being realistic about what you can handle, creating and sticking to a schedule and using your smartphone to stay on top of emails and calendar reminders. I personally rely on multiple spreadsheets, calendar reminders and to-do lists to manage both my full-time job duties and side-gig responsibilities. But remember, your family, your friends and your health come first. If you are not seeing the people you love or getting enough sleep or find yourself under constant pressure, its time to reconsider if youve bitten off more than you can chew.Usually, your full-time employer handles much of the tax burden for you (administratively, that is you still must fork over whats owed to Uncle Sam out of your own wallet). However, when you are self-employed or a contractor , you have to manage taxes all on your own.The biggest change is that, in addition to the employee tax, you must now also pay the employer tax. Yep, thats right, youre going to be charged at a higher rate on all self-employment income. Fun, right?Another big change is the frequency of filing. While you still get to join in the big April 15th party for your full-time employment income and your side gig income, you must also pay estimated quarterly taxes on all self-employment income. If your side gig is with Uber , Rover , TaskRabbit or any other app-based companies, reach out to the HR department to learn if you are considered an employee or contractor to determine how to file your taxes.Alternatively, you can have your full-time employer withhold more money than it needs to in order to cover what you will owe for your side gig. Either way, I highly recommend setting aside 30 percent to 35 p ercent of your side gig income and earmarking that as cash specifically for taxes, whenever and however you pay them. More importantly, talk to a tax accountant if you are unsure of how to pay taxes on your side gig income to avoid facing any penalties from your friends at the IRS.Balancing a full-time job with a side hustle is doable. It just takes dedication, organization and respect for your employer and your own time.Timothy Moore is a full-time editor and freelance writer based in Germantown, Ohio.

5 Mistakes Fast-Growing Companies Need to Avoid

5 Mistakes Fast-Growing Companies Need to Avoid 5 Mistakes Fast-Growing Companies Need to Avoid Growth is good. But when it happens really fast, it can be a bit painful. In fact, for small and midsize businesses that suddenly find themselves on the fast track for growth, success can quite easily turn into failure if they aren’t prepared to scale and manage change effectively. Following are five mistakes fast-growing companies must avoid to ensure they can continue to meet current business demands while seizing new opportunities. 1. Failing to consult accounting and finance professionals Even if you only work with one accountant right now, and that person isn’t even in-house, you should be tapping his or her professional expertise. Accounting and finance staff know the numbers of your business. They,  therefore, have valuable insight about your firm’s strengths and weaknesses from a financial standpoint, which can help to inform your decision-making as you grow. Don’t try to wing it with accounting - turn to an expert. Consider working with an interim accountant for cyclical needs, like taxes, or as questions arise, such as, “How quickly should I try to accelerate my company’s growth?” 2. Burning through capital carelessly Business may be booming right now, but are you sure you need that bigger office space, or more inventory, or those new computers? A common pitfall for many fast-growing companies is committing to capital-intensive investments that simply may not be necessary - yet. Until you’re confident business demands warrant big spending, it may be a wiser course to follow Theodore Roosevelt’s advice: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” 3. Borrowing more money than necessary When a lender is willing to provide a generous loan or line of credit to your fast-growing company, it’s tempting to take it. You might even view it as a bit of a safety net that you can lean on in the future if your business success suddenly takes an unexpected turn in any direction. But accepting funds based on “what if” versus “need now” could lead to financial burdens that undermine your company’s profits and the ability to borrow money later when it’s really needed. 4. Letting accounts receivable stockpile You’re working around the clock. You’re pushing product out the door. You’re meeting your clients’ demands. And you’re not getting paid on time - or at all. Huh? This is obviously not a sustainable business model. Cash flow management is paramount for any company, but especially so for startups and other small and midsize businesses. So, set clear invoice terms, be sure to focus on collections, and send prompt reminders to customers who owe you. And if you don’t need to offer credit to your customers, don’t. 5. Not implementing adequate infrastructure While preserving capital is important (see #2), it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make well-considered, strategic investments (see #1) to support your business. Fast-growing companies need to make sure they have the right technology, staff and expertise in place to help drive growth. Think of it as building an “infrastructure for success” - a solid foundation on which your business can prosper. A final tip: Don’t race to the IPO Not all fast-growing businesses are destined to become publicly traded companies, of course. But if an initial public offering (IPO) is a goal for your company, take ample time to prepare. There’s a great deal to consider, including whether your company would be ready to meet new financial reporting and regulatory compliance requirements. Also keep in mind that the IPO process is very demanding for senior management - especially for the CEO and CFO, who will need to spend much of their time on the road talking with analysts and potential investors. In short, these executives won’t be able to focus on everyday business at a time when the company critically needs their guidance and attention. Fast growth does not always lead to longevity in the marketplace. If your small or midsize business is really starting to thrive, you’ll need to keep nurturing it until it can form solid roots. Tags

11 signs youre going to be successful, even if it doesnt feel like it

11 signs you're going to be successful, even if it doesn't feel like it 11 signs you're going to be successful, even if it doesn't feel like it If you’re pursuing your passions, if you’re learning, and if you’re forging solid relationships, you’re probably on track to do great things - even if you aren’t extraordinarily famous or wealthy.Below, we’ve listed a series of signs - based on research and expert opinion - that you’re doing better at this thing called life than you’d be inclined to believe. You’re always looking for a better way to do thingsAre you stuck in the past - or hurtling toward the future? On an episode of Business Insider’s podcast, ”  Success! How I Did It,” John Sculley, a former Apple CEO and president of Pepsi, said throughout his career he’s always asked questions like, “Why is it done this way?” He said success is largely about to the willingness “to solve a problem in a way that’s never been solved before.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The opposite t rait - resistance to change - can  stall your career, the same way it stalls big companies’ progress. That’s according to Scott Galloway, a clinical professor of marketing at New York University’s Stern School of Business, the founder of the digital intelligence firm L2, and the author of the new book ”  The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google.”In his book, Galloway writes: “Trying to resist this tide of change will drown you. Successful people in the digital age are those who go to work every day, not dreading the net change, but asking: ‘What if we did it this way?'”You have a vision for the kind of life you wantGranted, that vision may evolve over time. But the point is not to take a job exclusively for the short-term benefits - like compensation. As Nathaniel Koloc, former ReWork CEO,  told The Harvard Business Review, instead of asking yourself, “What job do I want?” you should be  asking yourself, “What life do I want?” And how does this gig fit into the broader picture?Even if you only have a  vision for the year ahead, career coach and former Googler Jenny Blake recommends asking yourself questions like, “What does my ideal average day look like?” and “What kinds of people do I want to be connected with or meeting?”You’re using your ‘signature strengths’Your signature strengths are simply the skills you’re uniquely good at.As Eric Barker, author of ”  Barking Up the Wrong Tree,” previously  told Business Insider, research suggests that “the more often you use those skills, the more you’re happier, you’re respected, you feel good about your job.” What’s more, “if you’re using those skills in your job, you’re going to achieve more.”You’re open to failureGalloway says the four major tech titans - Apple, Google, Facebook, and Amazon - are all open to occasional failure, if it means they’re trying something new. If you want to be successful in your own career, you should be the same way.As Galloway previously told Business Insider, “If you are not in your own professional life and your professional career kind of wiping out and getting beaned in the face every once in a while, you aren’t trying hard enough.”You’re willing to take calculated risksYou’d be hard pressed to find a successful person who hasn’t taken some amount of risk in their career.Take Hearst executive Joanna Coles, for example. As a young newspaper reporter, Coles once  burst in on a woman in a bathroom stall  in an attempt to land a scoop. Later, she left her job as a foreign correspondent for the Times of London and took a job in magazine journalism - even though she was pregnant and didn’t have a visa that would allow her to say in New York.Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon and the richest man in the world, has spoken often about  how he decides which risks to pursue. In one interview, Bezos explained how he decided to found Amazon:“I knew that when I w as 80, I was not going to regret having tried this. I was not going to regret trying to participate in this thing called the Internet that I thought was going to be a really big deal. I knew that if I failed, I wouldn’t regret that.“But I knew the one thing I might regret is not ever having tried. I knew that that would haunt me every day.”You’re nice to people - even if they’re not your superiorsOn another episode of “Success! How I Did It,” Coles described the importance of  maintaining good relationships  with your friends and colleagues. She said:“The thing that I always try and say to young people starting out is your peer group is really the most important influence on your life because you are going to rise and fall together. And I have always got jobs through the loose ties of friendships and someone knowing someone who might know a job. And, you know, a group of you will start out together, and they sort of pull you with them.”Her number-one life tip? “ Don’t be an aâ€"hole.”You exhibit a ‘beginner’s mind’That’s a  concept from Zen Buddhism, and it describes constantly seeing the world anew, as if you didn’t know anything about it. It’s a big advantage in business. The late Steve Jobs was a proponent of the beginner’s mind. As Jeff Yang wrote in  The Wall Street Journal in 2011, Jobs emphasized the need to develop a beginner’s mind in order to eschew the constraints that cause us to come up with old answers to difficult problems. And Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff  told The Wall Street Journal: “I kind of try to let go of all the things that have ever happened so far in our industry, which is a lot of stuff, and just go, OK, what’s going to happen right now?”You make time every day to learnYou should be allotting some of your time to reading or research - something that expands your horizons.Beth Comstock, former vice chair of General Electric, recommends devoting 10% of every workday to these activities. In an interview with LinkedIn, Comstock shared some career advice:“The first thing you have to say to people is: Make room for discovery. If I manage myself, I manage a team, I manage a division, there’s a certain amount of your budget, your time, your people that need to be focused on what’s next.“And it could be 10% - you know for yourself. I think usually 10% is a pretty good way to think about it.“Think about how you manage your own time. Can I spend 10% of my time a week reading, going to sites like Singularity, TED, talking to people, going to industry events, asking people: What trends are you seeing? What are you nervous about? What are you excited about?”You’re self-awareAccording to Tasha Eurich, an organizational psychologist and the author of ”  Insight,” most people  don’t know how others really see them. Those who have a more accurate picture of how they’re coming off tend to be more successful.Eurich recommends finding one or two “loving critics, ” or “people who will be honest with us while still having our best interests at heart.” Tap them regularly for insight into how you can perform better at work.Executive coach Marshall Goldsmith goes so far as to say that what other people think of you matters even  more  than how you see yourself. In his book ”  What Got You Here Won’t Get You There,” Goldsmith writes:“If we can stop, listen, and think about what others are seeing in us, we have a great opportunity. We can compare the self that we want to be with the self that we are presenting to the rest of the world. We can then begin to make the real changes that are needed to close the gap between our stated values and our actual behavior.”You show gratitudeGratitude can benefit  your relationships, your health, and your career.Doug Conant is known for turning around Campbell’s Soup as its CEO. He’s also known for  making gratitude a key leadership strategy: Throughout his career at Campbell’s, he sent mo re than 30,000 handwritten thank-you notes to staffers and clients.Other famous and successful people have a  daily gratitude practice. For example, John Paul DeJoria takes the first five minutes of the day to “be thankful for life.”You’re self-compassionateSelf-compassion  doesn’t make you weak or unambitious. Instead, scientists say it can make you more successful.Research on self-compassion suggests that it has three components: engaging in a positive internal dialogue, understanding that everyone makes mistakes, and being aware of your thoughts and feelings without succumbing to them.In ”  The Happiness Track,” Emma Seppala, science director of Stanford’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education. recommends one strategy for practicing self-compassion: Treat yourself as you would treat a colleague or friend who has failed.  This article was originally posted on BusinessInsider.com.

9 Ways to Earn Free Professional Development Units

9 Ways to Earn Free Professional Development Units 9 Ways to Earn Free Professional Development Units If you are a project management professional (PMP), you will need to keep your skills current. The Project Management Institute (PMI) offers continuing professional education courses to those who are certified in project management. All PMI certifications, with the exception of a certified associate in project management (CAPM), require holders to follow the Continuing Certification Requirements Program. The objective is to make sure that your certified competencies stay up-to-date and that your skills stay relevant. What Is a PDU? A PDU is a Professional Development Unit. The exact requirements for your particular situation will be set out in the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Handbook from PMI. You have to earn your PDUs over a three-year period, which starts at the time that you first pass your exam. At the time of writing, the PMP ® qualification requires you to earn 60 PDUs in those three years by doing qualifying activities. It all sounds very manageable, but if you hold a couple of credentials, or intend to keep your certificates valid and active for the rest of your professional career, then the cost of continuing education can soon mount up (don’t worry, this article will help you find ways to cut that cost). What Counts as a Qualifying Activity? A qualifying activity is one that is relevant to the PMI Talent Triangle topics, meets a specified purpose and uses knowledgeable resources. The PMI Talent Triangle covers technical project management, leadership and business, and strategic management. In other words, most of what you do and see regarding professional development is going to be relevant, but a chat with someone who knows nothing about the subject of project management isn’t going to count. An easy way to check if your source is knowledgeable is to use PMI Registered Education Providers (REPs) but you will often find that these educational bodies charge for their training. Otherwise, use your professional judgment. If the source sounds unprofessional, it probably is. Can I Get PDUs for Free? Yes! You can earn PDUs for free. You can, of course, spend a lot of money on attending high-cost training and conferences. Or you can use the suggestions that follow and slash the cost of maintaining your PMI credentials. Places to Look for Free PDUs The PM Podcast: The PM Podcast is a free podcast (did you guess from the name?) covering all kinds of project management topics include interviews with experts. It offers you 60 free PDUs. Simply download the podcast episodes and listen at your leisure.Attending organization meetings: These will be typically limited to only a couple of PDUs per recertification cycle, but hey, any free PDUs are better than none, right? You can claim a PDU for an organization meeting in certain circumstances, for example, a PMI Chapter event with a speaker. Professional bodies that hold meetings with an educational element, like a seminar or networking event that has a panel discussion or presentation, would count here. Some chapters charge for events, some allow PMI members to attend for free. Check the details with the organizer before you attend. Reading: Yes, you can claim free PDUs for reading! Self-directed reading related to the credential that you hold will count toward your PDU total. There are countless articles, blogs, whitepapers, and books on topics to do with the PMI Talent Triangle themes, so you are bound to find something that is both interesting and meets the requirements of the CCR scheme.Working as a practitioner: Working in your day job allows you to use your skills, and thus improve them. You can record time spent doing the work of a project manager (project coordinator or any other job in a project management field) as long as it’s relevant. So, a two-day company conference on the strategic business goals for the upcoming year wouldn’t count, but time spent preparing for and attending project board meetings, working with your project sponsor, delivering communication material about your project, and so on would all contribute. Be careful to note down exactly what you are claiming for and why it is rele vant in your PDU log so that you can justify PDUs claimed for this area if you are asked. Giving a presentation: Time to prove those public speaking skills! Giving a presentation to your colleagues or your local project management community is a great way to share the knowledge that formally and directly relates to your credential.Creating content: Plus, you can count the hours spent in preparing your content! PMI offers publishing opportunities through KnowledgeShelf or ProjectManagement.com and the content you create and publish here (or elsewhere) can count toward your PDU total and will only cost you brainpower and time. Share your presentations on SlideShare or upload a video of your presentation to YouTube. You could write a short text to go with the video and put that on LinkedIn - you probably already have a profile there so you wouldn’t even have to create a new account. Volunteering: If you have plenty of time but not much cash to spend on PDUs, volunteering is a great way to boost your total. There are thousands of PMI volunteers worldwide, and there is bound to be a chapter near you. Talk to your local team and see what positions they have that would be a good fit for your skills. If volunteering for your chapter isn’t something that appeals to you, think about donating your time, in a project management-related capacity, to a local non-profit. If your school PTA needs a hand organizing a big summer event, for example, using your project management skills to lead that piece of work would be something you could record on your PDU log. Training: Most formal training is going to require a financial outlay, but look out for online courses that offer free access. You may also be able to attend training sessions as part of in-person conferences. As long as the material is relevant to the certification you hold, then you should be okay to claim PDUs.Attending webinars: Webinars are often provided by reputable project management training companies and are made available for free, although you’ll probably have to listen to a sales pitch at the end. Check with the organizer about whether or not you can claim PDUs as a result of attending. If the presentation is scheduled for an hour, taking out time for irrelevant content and a question and answer session, you could probably still claim a fraction of a PDU for the educational content that was delivered. How to Declare Free PDUs PMI doesn’t care how you got your PDUs or whether you paid for them, so the process of recording and declaring your PDUs is the same regardless of whether they were paid for or free. Simply log in to the Continuing Certification Requirements System and record your activities. The handy dashboard will tell you how many more PDUs you need to achieve in this current recertification cycle. Remember, your PDU activity could be audited at any time, and you could be asked to provide justification of your learning and continuous professional development through these routes. Don’t pad out your PDU log with dubious activities. There are plenty of honest ways to learn, develop, and claim PDUs for free as long as you seek them out.

5 Top New Years Resolutions for Job Seekers 5 Top New Years Resolutions for Job Seekers 2career regrets  for the year ahead! Stop talking about your past titles Prospective employers don’t care what you were called in the past or what your official responsibilities were- they want to know specifically how you impacted the bottom line and why your previous employers were better off because you worked there. To that end, brainstorm two to three tangible results you achieved in each position and map them directly to what you’ll do in the new job. The first of our resolutions for job seekers is to stop talking and about what you were called in the past and focus on what you achieved. Enable yourself to be more competitive by honing a desirable skill in your industry. Another of our resolutions for job seekers is to spend some time making yourself better in the industry in which you want to work. A good mentor is a person who is a few years ahead of you in your field and who is willing and able to meet with you on a regular basis and provide guidance on how to handle job search and career-related questions. You should be able to count on this person to be objective in a way that friends and family can’t be. Consider a flexible job If you’ve been looking for traditional employment for a while and nothing has panned out, maybe it’s not meant to be and you should consider widening your search to include alternative job options like freelancing, consulting, and part-time jobs. 3 ways to transition back to life without summer Fridays

3 ways to transition back to life without summer Fridays 3 ways to transition back to life without summer Fridays It’s one thing when you never had summer Fridays  at work in the first place, but if you did,  dealing with their eventual end  can be rough, to say the least. You might just feel like the rug has been pulled out from under you - and then thrown out the window. Here are three simple ways to ease the blow when that day comes around.Don’t save the worst for lastPushing off that huge assignment until the very last minute when you had the option to work ahead is never a good idea, but it can feel even worse when summer Fridays end. Basically, trying to move mountains from 9 to 5 at the end of the week is the last thing you’ll want to be doing. So even though you have another full work day ahead, reward yourself with more time to work on other things - instead of what you’re dreading the most. If you do more work earlier in the week, you’ll be in better shape.Wear something that lifts your moodDo you ever look around on Friday morning commutes to work and see that similar look o f resignation in people’s eyes? Everyone seems like they’re completely over the week already and have already checked out into the weekend. If you’re one of those people, one way to feel a little better is to wear something that brightens your day. It might not make the time tick any faster, but at least you’ll be wearing something that ups your confidence level. So instead of picking up the same old thing you wear every Friday, toss it back into your closet and pull on something that feels better.Make plans with a friend after work - or just relaxWhether it’s happy hour drinks at a local bar, dinner or a movie you’ve been wanting to see for a while, make plans that you’ll be looking forward to all day. This might even motivate you to get your work done faster - just make sure you’re not swimming in assignments you procrastinated on  until the very end. If something pressing comes up, handle it the best way you can.But just remember that the opposite also applies: th ere’s nothing wrong with heading straight home for self-care after a jam-packed Friday. Don’t be afraid to take time for yourself when you’ve been thinking you’d  rather be home than anywhere else all day.  Pay attention to how you’re feeling, and go from there.

Beware of the Job Search Scams

Beware of the Job Search Scams Beware of the Job Search Scams I just received an email pitching me on a new service for job seekers. Apparently, for *only* $10 per lead, this person (who I will not mention or link to) will find you contact names and information for hiring managers at your target companies. So for $100, you can have 10 names and email addresses. Names and email addresses that you could find yourself using sites like Google, LinkedIn and ZoomInfo along with some good old-fashioned sleuthing. And names and email addresses of people who may not even be hiring new staff right now. This is a complete scam and I would have just deleted the email if it wasnt for the fact that I am seeing more and more of these pitches. This particular scammer gleefully described the current unemployment numbers along with the projected numbers for later in the year. I could just picture the guy sitting in his office drooling over all the bad news and hatching one scheme after another to capitalize on other peoples misfortune. Look, there are lots of ethical, talented career marketing professionals out there. There are good research services who can help you develop a list of solid contacts and who will do it for a lot less than $10 per lead. (For one such service, check out Barbara Safani at Career Solvers). There are lots of honest and gifted resume writers and career coaches. But in this current economic climate, there are also going to be a lot of people who see an opportunity to prey upon fear so its critical that you do your research if youre considering hiring anyone to help with your search. Here are a few tips for avoiding the scammers: 1) If it seems too good to be true, it is. If some company emails you saying they have a great opportunity and they want to discuss it with you, be very wary. Take the call hey you never know! but be aware that lots of so-called career marketing firms use this pitch to try selling their services. If this is a real job opportunity, the recruiter will tell you about the position and ask some interview questions on the phone. If its a scam, the sales person will tell you that youre qualified for lots of positions but first you need some help with your resume and marketing strategy. Hang up at that point! 2.) Google is your friend! If youre considering any professional service, research the company and the companys President/owner on Google. Read more than just the first page. Youll find out lots about their reputation, how they operate and how long they have been in business. 3) Look for a blog. Any professional career marketer worth his or her salt should be blogging regularly. Any company worth its salt should have employees blogging regularly. If theyre not, they dont understand how to market effectively in todays world and if they cant market themselves, why should you believe they can help you market yourself? A blog also lets you see how much the expert knows. I bet my friend with the $10 job leads doesnt have a blog because I bet my friend with the $10 job leads hasnt been involved in career marketing until just now. 4). Ask questions and shop around. No matter how much you like the first company you find, be sure to do some shopping around. Doing so may raise issues you hadnt initially thought of and at the very least, if you still choose the first company you found, youll feel more informed about the choice. This is a worrying time for all of us and unfortunately there are lots of people looking to take advantage. Be smart about doing your research and youll easily be able to tell the difference.

Measure Your Employer Branding Content to Green Light Its Growth

Measure Your Employer Branding Content to Green Light Its Growth Measure Your Employer Branding Content to Green Light Its Growth Measure Your Employer Branding Content to Green Light Its Growth Shaw Is your employer branding content doing what you want it to do? Are you tracking the right metrics to prove its value to higher ups? Do you know if its working? If mastering the measurement of your employer brand content seems a bit daunting, weve got a clear plan of action to help you get it right. After all, your employer brandingis essential to the success of your companys recruitment and retention goals. Just how important is having an employer brand strategy? According to a 2017 Workforce Employer Branding Practices survey conducted for Monster, nearly four in ten mature organizations surveyed have vanguard employer branding practice in place. Surprisingly, 40 percent of those companies reported a lack of budget as a roadblock to strengthening their employer brand. Perhaps youre in a similar situation. What metrics will give you the proof you need to know youre moving in the right direction? What are you going to measure? How will you measure it? And more importantly, how will you build on those findings? Read on for valuable expert insights to help you grow the value of your companys employer branding content with better measurement. Measure what matters most Ever bake a cake without a recipe? Likely not. In the same way, youll need to know what to measure and why those metrics matter before you can assess your brand strategy (your yummy cake.) According to The Foundrys director of innovation and consulting Kareen Emery, employer branding can fix many things, she noted. It can help retention, time to hire and quality of hires. The top priority is to clearly define your employer brand needs and priorities. Only then can you determine which metrics matter. Those metrics are used by a majority of mature organizations who responded to the 2017 Workforce Employer Branding Practices survey. Sixty-three percent said they use employee retention or turnover to track the strength of their employer brand. Forty-eight percent use it to track time to fill per open position, while fifty-three percent use it to track the quality of their candidate pool. When developing your own strategy, focus on metrics that are directly tied to your content goals. For example, if quality of hire is a key priority but retention isnt, base your decisions about content on the former metric. Use your priority metrics to drive content decisions. Avoid letting non-priority metrics distract you from your primary goals. Set a baseline, and revisit it often Do you know your target audience? If not, you wont know how to reach them or how to accurately measure their feedback. Lets say the primary audience youre trying to reach is engineers. Your goal is that they see your organization as an innovative industry leader. To reach them, find a place where they congregate on the web, like Reddit or Github. Then, conduct a short survey with this group that reveals their perceptions of your employer brand. Imagine that 25% of those responders see your company as an innovative industry leader. That gives you a baseline to work on your employer value proposition (EVP) and start building targeted content. This baseline is simply a starting point. The next important step is to measure your progress against that baseline and to do so repeatedly. Six months after your content has gone live, target those same people again, Emery recommends. Ask the same questions another time. Hopefully, you should see the needle move. This is how you know youre really making an impact with what youre doing. Tracking the impact youve made on your target audience is valuable information to make the case for growing your employer brand budget. Optimize your content for humansand machines Creating an effective employer value proposition is, in Emerys words, a fine art. Your content must resonate with humans while also navigating the complex world of search engine optimization (SEO). SEO will help drive traffic to your company website. Youll want to measure the content that these visitors are consuming, as well as how often they share it. Be sure to measure these engagement metrics on a monthly basis. Then, use your findings to create more content thats similar to whats already performed well. Emery views this process as a feedback loop. Your SEO drives people, people drive the analytics and the analytics drive your decisions, she said. Youre going to learn from your content. The goal is to always stay on top of it, understand it and evolve with it. Dont forget to tell great stories Now that you understand how to track your employer brand results, theres one more step that you dont want to overlook, says Emery. All the planning and measuring in the world wont get you anywhere if you arent telling great stories. I always tell my clients three things, she said. Be bold, be compelling and be genuine with your storytelling. These three things are key to making sure the messaging youve put together will make a difference on your key performance metrics, or KPIs. Most of all, says Emery, be sure you deliver on the promises that your content gives readers. If you over-promise and under-deliver, your KPIs are likely to go down. Your audience wont forget that. Now youve got your grocery list of ingredients to measure the results of your employer branda solidstrategy and key metrics, a target audience and data-driven content decisions. Use them to track its success. Then share that story with your team. Armed with these metrics, youll be ready to make the case for taking your employer branding content to the next level.
