Stop talking about your past titles Prospective employers don’t care what you were called in the past or what your official responsibilities were- they want to know specifically how you impacted the bottom line and why your previous employers were better off because you worked there. To that end, brainstorm two to three tangible results you achieved in each position and map them directly to what you’ll do in the new job. Enable yourself to be more competitive by honing a desirable skill in your industry. Another of our resolutions for job seekers is to spend some time making yourself better in the industry in which you want to work. Solicit a mentor You may think you have a mentor, but does that person really qualify? A good mentor is a person who is a few years ahead of you in your field and who is willing and able to meet with you on a regular basis and provide guidance on how to handle job search and career-related questions. You should be able to count on this person to be objective in a way that friends and family can’t be. Consider a flexible job If you’ve been looking for traditional employment for a while and nothing has panned out, maybe it’s not meant to be and you should consider widening your search to include alternative job options like freelancing, consulting, and part-time jobs. Plus, a flexible job can be a terrific way to try out new roles or fields. Leverage this opportunity to investigate other flexible job options on a site like. Don’t lose hope Did you feel your motivation flagging as you neared the end of 2013? The worst thing you can do is despair. The job market is actually improving, and hiring managers are confident that even more positions will open up this year.
